Interpreting the Symbols

The Skeleton

In Shamanic tradition, the final journey from birth to death is an offering of everything: possessions, status, name, family, even body and blood. When only the skeleton remains, the soul receives a new identity, new purpose, new form, and new power. This is what the armored skeleton represents: the great transformation between life and death.

Armor and Helm

The helm's shape echoes an eagle's beak, calling to mind the Scorpio sign. The open visor symbolizes the unveiling of truth—the revelation of the soul's authentic nature.

The Horse

The horse is a sacred and noble animal, often sacrificed to the gods. With lightning flashing from its eyes, it becomes the judge. If you carry guilt, you will die; if you are innocent, you will survive.

The Red Feather

The feather is the symbol of Maat, the Egyptian goddess of truth. Every soul will be weighed against it—if light as a feather, you are innocent. The feather's red color also speaks to rebirth.

The White Flag

The banner bears five white petals, symbols of purity and spiritual perfection. The number five relates to wholeness, encompassing all five elements (air, fire, water, earth, spirit) and the integrity of the human body. The phrase "five contains five" suggests fundamental principle or absolute completion.

The Witnesses

The Pope: Observes Death with reverence and virtue, standing tall through faith.

The King: Has fallen. The King (card 4) and Death (card 13) are both lawmakers. The King establishes social and state law; Death establishes natural law. Before death, all rank and class are equal.

The Woman: Kneels in pride and indolence. She does not fully surrender, but shows a desire to flee.

The Child: An innocent soul, completely blameless, it faces Death directly and offers a rose—the symbol of life.

The Landscape Elements

The Boat: To the Greeks and Egyptians, a symbol of birth and generation—the vessel that carries souls to the island of the dead.

The Cliff: Divides the world above (humanity) from the world below (the divine).

The Tower: The boundary between the known and unknown, it forms a gateway of beginning, a sign of transformation.

The City: The source of wisdom and knowledge.

The Sun: Represents both dawn and dusk—one world entering at sunrise, another departing at sunset.

General Meaning: Karma and Rebirth

The Death card carries profound meaning around cause and effect. What have you sown? What will you reap? Ultimately, we all must face judgment.

When that moment approaches, do not resist—accept it. Nothing will be "worse" if you let go. Every ending is a new beginning.

If you wish to grow, you must continually pass through cycles of ending and rebirth. Without endings, there is no rebirth.
