Classical Four Elements vs Wu Xing: The Melaap Framework

RWS tarot uses the Western classical quad (Fire · Air · Water · Earth) via Hot/Cold and Dry/Wet — not Wu Xing cycles. Why Melaap treats question–answer element mismatch as more important than a 'positive card'.

Two systems, two logics

Many readers approach tarot through Wu Xing (Metal · Wood · Water · Fire · Earth) — generation and destruction cycles. Rider-Waite-Smith and the Golden Dawn tradition instead use the classical Western four elements: Fire, Air, Water, Earth.

They are not interchangeable. Melaap adopts the Western quad because it is the native "grammar" of the 56 Minor Arcana — not because it is "more correct" than Wu Xing.

Origins: Empedocles and Aristotle

Empedocles (c. 5th century BCE) held that all matter mixes four rhizōmata (roots): Fire, Water, Air, Earth. Aristotle systematized them through two opposing pairs:

Unlike Wu Xing (e.g. Water generates Wood), the Western quad does not describe continuous cyclic transformation but energy quality at a moment — suited to diagnosing a tarot spread.

Mapping in RWS tarot

The 22 Major Arcana belong to no suit — they are large archetypes, sometimes linked to elements via astrology (e.g. The Emperor / Aries → Fire), but Melaap reads Majors primarily as "lessons interrupting the elemental flow."

Western harmony and opposition

Harmony (shared energy direction): - Fire + Air — both Hot, outward: action + ideas, Air feeds Fire - Water + Earth — both Cold, inward: feeling + material stability

Direct opposition (elemental cross): - Fire ↔ Water — Hot/Dry vs Cold/Wet: extinguish or evaporate - Air ↔ Earth — Hot/Wet vs Cold/Dry: wind erodes, earth blocks

Conditional support: Fire–Earth, Air–Water — can bear fruit or turn stormy if unbalanced.

Comparison with Wu Xing — avoid mixing

Melaap does not map Metal→Swords, Wood→Wands in Wu Xing fashion. If you know Wu Xing, treat the Western quad as four experience dimensions (action · thought · feeling · material), not a yearly cycle.

Melaap differentiator: mismatch ≠ bad cards

Tarot communities (including Zhihu sources Melaap references) stress:

> Ask about action (Fire) and draw mostly Cups (Water) — even "positive" cards are not an action plan. The answer lives in emotion: fear, longing, or unseen connection.

Melaap surfaces this as a question–answer opposition warning after every spread.

Three Melaap practice tools

1. Four Elements spread

From [Zhihu-582592385 layout](/hoc-tarot/zhihu-582592385): four positions Fire → Earth → Air → Water. Each position asks one life layer. If the Fire slot holds a Cup — read position mismatch, do not force "act now."

2. Adjacent card nobility

Two Minor cards beside each other in 3–5 card spreads: - Same element → amplified - Opposition (Fire beside Water) → mutual cancellation; read the tension - Major between minors → archetype breaks the elemental stream

3. Hot/Cold · Dry/Wet quality analysis

Suit counts are not enough. Many Wands with dominant Dry + Cold may lean Earth (slow, solid, practical) despite Fire suit numbers.

Four-dimension self-check (before drawing)

Fire: Do I have drive, or am I stalling?
Water: Are feelings heard, or suppressed?
Air: Is my mind clear, or avoiding a truth?
Earth: Work, money, body — is the foundation solid?
