The Ten of Pentacles and a Father's Legacy

FamilyMelaap Editorial·

My father died suddenly. In the midst of the funeral arrangements, I drew the Ten of Pentacles upright. The reader's words stayed with me: legacy is the value we pass forward, not merely the assets we leave behind.

I began writing down the things my father used to say — his small wisdoms, his particular way of seeing the world. A year later, that small notebook became a gift for my younger brother.

In that act of gathering his words, I understood what the card had been reflecting back to me. The Ten of Pentacles speaks not of vaults or inheritance papers, but of something far more durable: the continuity of love, the transmission of understanding across generations, the way a person's presence lingers in the things we choose to remember and share.

My father's legacy was never only his own. It became ours — mine, my brother's, and perhaps one day, our children's. In learning to see it this way, I learned to grieve differently, and to receive what he had already given.

Lessons learned

Legacy is not what we acquire, but what we consciously choose to carry forward. The deepest inheritances are often invisible — held in memory, in wisdom, in the small turns of phrase that remind us of someone we love. To honor those we have lost is sometimes simply to notice what they taught us, and to pass it on.
